Two New Courses at Adult School

The 2008 Fall schedule for adult school classes begins on Tuesday, September 9 at 7pm with a six-session class on the classic novel, Tode ja Oigus I. All participants will have finished reading the novel before the first class session. The discussion will focus first on the theme of “man versus the land,” the ways of farm life and its traditions in Estonia and impact of the land on the Estonian character and culture and secondly on the literary merits of the novel. The course will, of course, be conducted in Estonian and some writing in Estonian will be required.

Irene Verder, who taught the popular Estonian language classes in 2007-2008, will be back to lead the discussions.

The six-week course costs $30. Registration is required. Contact Karin Lichter at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or call (732) 446-7615.

The second course is a series of six Estonian history lectures by Peep Rebane, Emeritus Professor of History, University of Pennsylvania. It is entitled From Ancient Times to the Coming of Independence. The course begins at 7pm on Tuesday, October 28 and ends on Tuesday, December 2. The two-hour lectures are arranged chronologically and will be conducted exclusively in English. A question and answer period is included. The course is designed especially for those Estonian-Americans who have had no formal schooling in Estonian language or history but any and all are welcome to sign up. Each lecture will have a brief intermission during which coffee will be available.

As above, the cost is $30 for the series and registration is required. For those wishing to attend any single lecture the cost is $10 at the door. For registration and info contact Karin Lichter as above.
